Speaker Abbas Worries Over Malnourishment Of Children
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas has raised concern over Nigeria's high malnutrition rates, particularly affecting children and hindering physical and cognitive development, educational growth, and economic potential.
Speaking at the launch of the Local Organizing Committee for the National Assembly’s summit on nutrition and food security in Abuja, Abbas emphasized the need for legislative action to address food insecurity and malnutrition, which threaten Nigeria’s economic stability and public health.
Represented by Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Abbas pledged the House's support for collaborative efforts with State Assemblies to tackle these challenges.
Hon. Chike Okafor, Committee Chair, highlighted that malnutrition, especially in northern Nigeria, has worsened, spiking by 51% among children and aggravated by recent floods disrupting food supplies. He stressed the summit’s role in shaping policies to address this humanitarian crisis and strengthen Nigeria's nutrition and food security.
