Governor Diri Set Up Committee on Prerogative of Mercy
Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri has constituted an advisory committee on the prerogative of mercy.
This, he said is in accordance with the prerogative of mercy law of 2007 and in line with section 212 of the Constitution.
Speaking after the Third Security Council Meeting held at Government House, Yenagoa, the Governor said it became imperative to constitute the body in order to ensure correctional centres in the state are de-congested.
Governor Diri commended members of the state security council as well as youths on the relative peace experienced in the state during and after the ENDSARS protest.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Dambo Biriyai who is also the Chairman of the advisory committee said the committee will rightly give counsel to the governor on convicts to pardon, as the representatives of the police commissioner and the special adviser to the Governor on security matters also expressed their views.
Bayelsa state has been in the news in recent times on increase in criminal activities, as well as the shooting of four market women which include a 17-yr-old girl by a trigger happy policeman who has since been arrested.
